Well it would let me know more about him. Depends on whatstageof the relationship we are in also if he feels the need to tell me so I understand him better.

I think if the someone I cared about opened up and told me about things that had happened in the past I would surely care about how those things had effected them and made them the person they are in the here and now

The here and now is fine... but your past is what builds or destroys your character. Some people are strong and some weak. Its nice to know where they are and how they handle things. It gives you guidelines to live by and or acceptance of.... No two people are alike.

Of course you need to know about someone's past to truly understand them. I do not need chapter and verse all at once. If the details do not fill out over time then we aren't properly communicating, are we?
