I work, part-time for a cattle rancher. It's been dryer than than an English joke out here. Ranchers are paying top dollar for hay, when they can find it. Large bale goes for $175.00 and will last 20 cows about 4 days. He has a little over 300 head.
Almost doesn't pay him to have them. Auction prices are low because of lack of feed and the lower price paid for imported Beef.
Some of the countries we import Beef from are regulated and are free from banned pesticides. South America is not regulated and can use DDT and other pesticides that are ingested by the cattle, passing it on to the consumer.
McDonalds is buying Beef from South America and feeding it to you.
For economic and health reasons, US Cattle Ranchers are asking the public to Boycott McDonalds until they quit using South American Beef.

there is place here locally that ships hay.. it's called L&j in north eastern part of Ohio. Hanoverton or kensinton. I know a lot of loacl hay gets sold there to them. depending on the quality 1st or 3rd cuttings alfalfa content etc.

BEEF? You call that beef? When did McDonalds start using beef again? I haven't tasted anything at McDs that tasted like beef for a decade or 2. Even tho' they add flavoring to make it taste like beef, it still doesn't taste like beef.rant

Wow. I own some land in Texas. A little over 87 acres..30-something with alfalfa and I've been letting the neighbor come over for free and cut and bale it for his cows for years.

I havn't been there since 2004 but with prices like that I should go and renegotiate.

I'm with you on buying American. Everyone who thinks about it would but they go ahead and buy the clothes, appliances, zoom zooms and wam wams made in places like China, Taiwan, Japan, India, etc.

When the US was a manufacturing economy, we were at the top of the food chain. Now you can't get steel that wasn't forged in India, heavy equipment that wasn't made in Japan, textiles that were not made in China, replacement car parts not from Mexico. It goes on and on. Lets not even mention automobiles, electronics or every other manufactured good that we used to make before the super-rich saw a few more dollars they could stack at the top end.

Im done.

Why don't we make the u.s. ranchers unregulated instead, so that they can compete with foreigners.

They can compete by using same chemicals that foreign farmers use.

This situation is not normal. Local production will always outbid the remote production, because of the cost of transport (everything else being equal).

As to the beef that was produced without government oversight, we can leave a choice of using it or not to a consumer.

If it is true, that for instance, a DDT-free beef is better, than it means, that a DDT-Free beef should be able to be sold for more. Right?

If such a beef is easier to sell for a higher price, then there is the competitive advantage right away, - in producing a good and healthy beef.

May-be the fact that a foreign, contaminated beef sells as good as local, uncontaminated beef, even competing with it in price, means that the public really doesn't care all that much about the contamination?

Every thing you said is true, but the problem is our goverments regulations which force out producers to follow certain rules. The goverment puts these rules in effect to protect us, but then allows other countries to ship in a product that was not produced by the same rules.

"I'm from the goverment and I'm here to help"noway sick tears

Where in south america??? Ive heard the best beef in the world is from Argentina but I do believe it is regulated. Ive had beef from Australia and thought it tasted like crap. Ive also found american beef to be less fatty...

I do believe that you should eat the beef from your own country to be sustainable though.
