On this day in 1836, Texas declared her independence from Mexico. Having no due representation in the national capital, having no local state capital of it's own, after Santa Ana abolished the Constitution of 1824, and sent a mexican garrison to take a cannon from the people of Gonzales, the people of Texas were at war with the Government of Mexico. Insurrections sprung up over much of Mexico, all the way to the Yucitan.

Texas would win her indendence a few months later when Houston overcame Santa Ana's forces at San Jacinto.
