It is NOT "racist, bigoted, or ignorant". It's a term of appropriation, and those to whom it refers to wear it like a badge of honor. Why? Because they don't have any problem acknowledging the truth about things. They are quite aware of who and what they are, and they don't need any artsy-fartsy psycho-babble term to make what they are more palatable to anybody else.
The term comes from coal miners, particularly from West Virginia, who wore red bandanas around their necks in a show of unionization. I certainly don't see anything "racist" about that. |
