Humm how stupid!
Volcano monitoring? Bet the people in Pompeii would have some appreciation for volcano monitoring. Some might counter, "Don't live by volcano's dammit! We shouldn't have to pay for that!" Maybe...but don't forget we are all subject to the wrath of mother nature whether it be by flood, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, fire, snow, drought, ice storms... Oh and yes I realize there are degrees of risk one should appreciate. Don't want to monitor volcanic activity? Screw it! Why do we monitor hurricanes? Or rain? Or snow? These things happen and it's a silly waste of money to monitor them! To warn people of potentially dangerous weather or geologic conditions? Madness I say! Last night our friend Bobby Jindal asserted monitoring volcanic activity was a waste of money. Somehow I think there are more than a few Americans who might disagree with him. Not just those on the ground living nearby these sites but perhaps those that are flying as well. Maybe Gov. Jindal thinks Jesus will keep an eye on the volcanoes? Here's a list of The Most Dangerous Volcanoes in the United States and a map so you all can see where they are located. http://geology.com/most-dangerous-volcanoes.shtml Akutan Volcano: A stratovolcano in Alaska - Last eruption in 1992. I think people are making too much of a big deal over this. Yes there needs to be someone to watch the volcano and make sure to get the news out that it might erupt.

I don't see how volcano monitoring is a waste of money. I guess that tornado sirens would be, too, with that kind of thinking.
