for our dour economic status to ruin a relationship? If so why? After all true love knows no barriers... or does it?

Of course it can, but not always in the manner you expect.

Example- The industry I've spent the better part of a third of my life working in has been decimated the last decade or so due to out-sourcing and various acts of stupidity on the part of my state government. Not only is it getting harder to find work, but the work gets more and more stressful due to the tightening of budgets and the skimming of production dollars on the part of the producers.

As a result, the stress of having to constantly deal with such stupidity will often wear down on me, which will affect my mood in a negative way. This will often result in a ruined or compromised relationship, as those very stresses will manifest themselves in one way or another.

In the end, love (even "true love") probably won't know all barriers, as the relationship is pretty much doomed at that point.

To use the poor economic status as a reason for a relationship to end up in ruins is a big cowardly cop out... (In my opinion)..

If my significant other was so depressed about losing his job and being broke that he offed himself, I think my relationship would suffer a bit.

It sure can. Had a long time relationship and in a nut shell she was a spender and I was a saver. Even though we kept seperate accts. When she ran out she came to me for support. Can only take so much of that. Just recently heard she had to declare bankrupcy. And on a great income as an R.N. A real shame.
