when people have differing opinions some make the disagreement personal? Someone might ask for advice or make a thought provoking post and two members may have differing perspectives. Why not just stick to the debate instead of attacking the person with the opposing point of view? It happens all the time out here. I also wonder if this disturbs anyone else as much as it does me.

Loo, you know the answer but I will state it just so you don't have to. When people feel passionate about something, their emotions are involved thereby becoming personal. Doesn't happen to every one all the time. But we all have our buttons. Mine says "pain in the a$$"

You see it on every forum...You get a good debate, one person disagrees, then it becomes a personal smear, which spoils the whole gist of the thread in the first place...

Have seen some fabulous debates turn out to be a ***** session because of one person...Sad...

The thing that burns my ass is that is very often "smart" people that engage in this type of behavior. When you ask them about it all of a sudden they get stupid and obstinate.

I would like to, but the righteousness that often accompanies such behavior makes me very cranky.

Good point. I guess since opinions are personal, when people have differing opinions it is made personal by one, because it IS personal, but there are different levels of personal, and we have to realize that.

Having no experience in discussion and criticism
Not having enough patience.
Being too self centered
Ignorant

-It's a problem on epidemic proportions. I blame the government, who set this example.

Doesn't that just state from you, that you are emotional about it and taking personally at the moment yourself?? Not be smart just a curiosity question upon the topic.spock winking  Not stating that I have ever seen you smear someone, because I haven't (disclaimer)

I never start, and always try to keep a debate about the topic, but when it turns personal I can't sit there and take it. I'm aware it is a defect.

when people have differing opinions some make the disagreement personal?

In the beginning way way back it did. Since I was taught proper forum protocal was topic only not personal. I try to always maintain my integrity on the boards since I know from past experiences what a person says out here is here maybe an eternity.

Someone might ask for advice or make a thought provoking post and two members may have differing perspectives. Why not just stick to the debate instead of attacking the person with the opposing point of view?

Well sadly IMO... It is personal for some, I think that some people have no other social life than the internet and if someone disagrees with them it is personal. They dont' take that step away from the keyboard before posting and come back swinging. When that happens as in real life the fight is on for most. I know it is rare for me to do it but I have done it and afterwards sent an email privately along with publicly apologizing. Now if you are talking about the person that does this rarely well we are human and we forget to disengage. If we are talking about chronic well so much for them getting a date can you imagine having a relationship with a person like that. I know I wouldn't.

No it really doesn't disturb me I look at the person and actually pity them. I also want to ask them if they have ever checked out anger management LOL.

I also find that some of the hottest firebrands on the boards are the meekest people in the "real world". It is kind of like the mild mannered person on a bike but put them behind the car and look out.

I just consider the source and refuse to let them have that much control over me.

The things I am bothered by probably don't bother anyone else. So I usually take the 5th on the pettiness out here

Loo darlin..I know you knew all this before I typed it.

If people have and idea I wish they would back it up with reasons and examples. If someone else disagrees same standard.

I really don't see that calling names, or profanity, or vulgarities persuades anyone to think anything.

I can follow a person who explains there feelings have influenced their decisions or choices. I do have a hard time with people who try to use fear, guilt, anger, or shame to persuade.
