Signs and omens are brought to your attention by the subconscious mind and they will appear in your awareness after you ask a serious question.

The sign will usually have special meaning to you and if it does not, you can ask around or look it up and see if there are any meanings that make sense to you. If you get the message the first time, the sign may not return. If you don't, you will see it three or four times.

Unless I have asked a particular question (I ask my subconscious, some people ask God.) ..but I don't pay much attention to signs unless I see (or experience) the same sign three times or more within a short time span, (like a week.)

Then I ask the question what does the sign mean to me. I will contemplate that for a while and probably the sign will come back in a little different way. I will usually figure out what it means, and when I do that, the sign will stop appearing. It stops because the message has been received. If you guess the wrong meaning, the sign will continue to show up.

Example of a sign: Seeing a crow or raven has the energy of "death" or "divorce." But it refers only to the energy, not to an event. The Death, Divorce energy in Tarot comes in the Death card. But the death card is not predicting a death. It uses the meaning of death to tell you about a permanent change or an ending to a situation.

So if you understand the meaning of that sign, it is telling you that change is coming or change is here, or change is necessary. It is a permanent change. Burn your bridges. You can't come back from death. That is the permanent part.

Again, seeing a crow does not always mean a death or a divorce in your reality, it is the energy of permanent change and ending of a situation where there is no going back. It is usually needed change or necessary change or change you have no control over.
