i started talking to a woman online, acually she is my sons nanny. and she is wanting to have a reltionship, has anyone had a long distance relationship, and do they acually work?

Depends on a number of different things. Communication, honesty, trust, actual distance, actual chance of seeing them...outside of that, no. But hey, that's just me.

I've been in a long distance relationship for over two years, there's about 1,200 miles between us.

The chances of it working are like any other relationship, except you do need to have a bit of money to travel back and forth as the flights can be expensive.

Of course there are downsides, but the biggest benefit that I can think of is that because we don't get to see each other daily, or even weekly, the time that we do spend together is always full of appreciation for each other and neither do we take each other for granted.
