i just went through a bad one myself. i had to look at myself and think about WHY i was trying to be sober. and even though i thought weed was ok to smoke it lead to my relapse. so really i think its common for lots to relapse at first but its because we dont sit back and think about EVERYTHING that makes use want to use. so think hard about it and know yourself. thats when i think youll make it as easy on yourself as you can. this just coming from someone who had a bad relapse.. good luck to you.

FIND A NEW AA GROUP...Find some new friends...If the old friends respect you, once they realize you are serious they will use caution around you if not you dont need them....Alot of aa members are there for the social life ,,others just lie about being clean and a few are serious and will try to help you...Anyone who coddles you and helps you make excuses is not going to help you stay sober and clean....Im glad you stoped new years before you blacked out but I wish you had learned enough from that episode not to have blacked out last weekend....Make up your own mind to be the guy who quits before they shut the lid on you.....

You just have to keep trying one day at a time. It is an everyday struggle for some. Perhaps a 12 step program could help. They have sponsors that you could call when you feel like you are going to relapse. Being around others trying to achieve the same goal gives you someone to talk to. In the past I attended Alanon meetings for people whose life has been affected by alcohol or drugs. All 12 step programs are similar. Best of luck to you totage.flowerforyou flowerforyou

That's the thing I'm all alone. All my friends still drink and use.

I'm thinking of moving out of state and starting fresh.

i grew up around the program first off you need to change your normal habits and you have to find new freinds go to as many meetings as posible one or two a day find a good sponsor who is willing to follow you around night and day

does one relapse within the first year when trying to be clean and sober?

IT DEPENDS ON HOW WELL SOMEONE WORKS THE PROGRAM. BY THE GRACE OF GOD & THE PROGRAM, I HAVE NOT PICKED UP ANOTHER DRINK SINCE I STARTED IN 1989.
IF YOU READ THE BOOK, AND ALL OF THE OTHER BOOKS THAT THE PROGRAM HAS, YOU WILL FIND OUT THAT THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT TO GO BACK OUT.
REMEMBER THAT WE HAVE TO DO THE " HOW " IN HOW IT WORKS.

" HOW " = HONESTY, OPENMINDEDNESS, & WILLINGNESS

does one relapse within the first year when trying to be clean and sober?

It varies with the individual. About 4-5% never do, the rest do many times.

So far, I've been screwing up the odds of 29 other alcoholics for 2065 days.

Over 27 yrs. No relapse.
Known many a man and woman who got sober, stayed sober.
But its just for today.
One day at a time.
Sometimes its just for right now.

I relapsed twice already, but it's only been six monthes.

The first time was of course new years, but that was only alcohol. I didn't black out or anything, just got drunk.

I did again this last weekend, did some pills and drinking. That kinda scared me, because I blacked out once again, but I woke up in my bed, I don't remember what happened. I just remember drinking, taking some pills, and waking up in my bed.

Have you tried substance abuse counseling?

I got two people back into AA over the holidays, one went 7 years before a massive relapse and one has his 90, but now is getting obsessive thoughts about drinking. I know a lot of people who make meetings and do the maintence program (sic). Remember the key points of the Big Book, daily mediation, etc. Just one day or one moment at a time; you can do this and easy does it.
