Malcolm and Angus Young got the name from seeing the letters (for electrical current) on the back of their sister's sewing machine.

AC/DC - Alternating Current/Direct Current

your house gets alternating current from the grid, while direct current is something like a battery would deliver.

The band has nothing to do with the bi-sexual slang word, they got their name from the real meaning (above).

According to the New American Webster's Handy College Dictionary:

AC/DC, adj.(slang) bisexual


To all the AC/DC fans, I was in no way impling that any member of the band is or was bisexual. It was just the first thing that popped into my head when I read the definition.

Yeah. AC/DC is evidently slang for a bisexual person, at least in Australia. In fact, Malcolm Young (rhythm guitarist of AC/DC and brother of lead guitarist Angus) had an interesting conversation pertaining to their choice of band name.

To quote Young, when he heard about what it stood for, he said, "We gotta change our name!".

BTW- AC/DC (the band) got its name from the Young brothers' sister, who owned a sewing machine that could evidently run on either AC current or DC current. She mentioned to the brothers as to how cool the name was, so they used it.

The band was formed in Australia, in 1973, partly from the former band Velvet Underground...(unrelated to the American group of that name)

In the fall of 1995, their sixteenth album, Ballbreaker, was released.

So, this is a group of guys in their 50's.

That has beeen the jist for years, but has nothing to do with the band itself....just a slang version of being bisexual....people put a twist to anything.
