Whatever you do, don't try to come up with any means of "temporary shelter" for the cat. It'll only act to enable the critter to stay with you. When that happens, you might as well get a kitty litter box for it, for it will have become YOUR cat.
Just take part in some "tough love" and let the cat stew outside. It'll eventually get the hint and go somewhere else. It's like the ol' saying goes, "Cats are a lot like women... once you've fed them, you'll never be able to get rid of them..." |

yes it will be a mistake to do any thing.
its sad yes but if you dont want it sticking around, dont help it |

Exactly. Cats aren't like dogs, who will stay outside your door until they're either dead or frozen solid- they're pretty crafty when it comes to obtaining shelter, and one of the most efficient ways of doing so is by putting on the whole "sad, pathetic homeless kitty" act.
In other words, they prey on unsuspecting animal lovers whose hearts are much too soft to NOT let the animal in the house. Besides- the cat more-than-likely belongs to another household out there somewhere if it looks rather well-fed. Most alley cats don't end up looking that way. |

ya, i ignored the cat...no sense in letting it in the garage...when then tommorrow it will still be cold and windy.
if it was a kitten I woulda...but that old cat....Im sure it knows how to survive. i did give it some more food though. |

Not only must you refrain from giving said cat any shelter, but also have to keep from feeding it, too. Even if you don't take it in the house, it'll keep hanging out by your door in the hopes of attaining a freebie meal. And that'd be just as bad as letting the cat in the first place.
Add to that the fact that cats are excellent hunters- they aren't so helpless that their only form of sustenance is through donations. They'll do just fine without your help. My dad is the absolute worst when it comes to feeding stray cats- if a cat saunters into his back yard, he'll just HAVE to feed it, which will result in said mangy beast hanging out in his back yard. He's also brought various strays into his house, too- as you'd expect, those "strays" would end up becoming "his" cats. Things would be kinda different if it were a kitten doing the begging for scraps. It'd be too young to fend for itself, so helping it out would be acceptable. You're just gonna have to go cold turkey with the little beggars. No shelter, no food, no nuthin'. Kinda like how most ladies treat their boyfriends. |

but but but but...i had to.
if the kids had been awake.it would probably be sleeping in the garage..with a nice blanket. |

Probably one of the GOOD blankets too, I bet.
It'll take some will-power and some gumption, but you simply have to keep from feeding the cat. It'll most-assuredly start hanging out at your door if you don't, as it will have found out that it will get an easy meal. Not only that, it's probably mooching off of some of the other houses in the neighborhood as well. |
