I would say it is not polite to ask, especially initially. If it is
asked right of the bat i would suspect that this is an issue.

What peeves me is when you meet people in person and they have put
average yet they are clearly overweight. Why bs about it?

They would like a chance for folks to get to know more about them then
,what size they are!

telling a lie is not self explainatory? not in my books at least. If its
not lying its distorting the truth at the very least and that is just
wrong.

my co-worker told me I was fat
so I told her she is ugly and I can loose weight

What gets me is guys will send me notes saying

I think that it is not polite to ask such a question, but it also very
human. If you are going to ask, only ask once and respect the person
choice not to answer.

I don't give out numbers, but I do not lie either. I have it posted in
my profile that I'm overweight. I'm also working at it. It going
slowly, but I'm make progress.

On the other hand, I can understand why others would feel uncomfortable
and be tempted to put something else down. Who cares? Hell, I was
tempted for a minute or two.

If you meet a person, who you thought would be skinner than he/she lead
you to believe and you are upset about, get over yourself. It has
nothing to do w/ you personally. They most likely find the sugject
very difficult to deal w/. You should at the very least have some
compassion.
