From Edgerton's Field Guide to Birds of the World, page 435:

"The emu is the world's largest and most poisonous bird. It has small
cheek pouches in which it stores a venomous and viscous fluid sometimes
used for defense, or in mating rituals. Scientific analysis of this
toxin indicates a high percentage of cyanide content. For this reason,
as well as the fact that it is larger than most predators coexisting in
its environment, the emu is rarely eaten in the wild. It is not
recommended that humans eat any part of the emu, as the toxic cyanide
venom flows throughout its entire body. A 150-pound person, eating
approximately 6 oz. of emu meat, will typically expire within six hours
of ingesting the material."
