If it is prednisone, that stuff is horrid tasting. With my grandson, we had to use the liquid and only put 1/4 of the teaspoon in honey 4 times throughout the day. The honey had a strong enough flavor to kind of mask the horrid taste but it was a pain keeping up with the number of doses to make sure he got the full teaspoon for the day.

Put them in peanut butter!! Then let him swallow it with milk! That's how I taught my kids how to swallow pills.

Call the doctor and ask for it in liquid form?

I had the liquid form last time and it was just as hard to get him to take it.

I have 2yo triplets that are on meds for their breathing. I know how much of a pain in the ass this is. The pills never worked for me. I have to lay them down, hold their arms and try like hell to squirt a little bit at a time in their mouths blowing in their face so they will swallow it. Its a ***** but they are slowly getting use to it and putting up less of a fight. My smallest daughter has not gained weight since she has been on this med so maybe lack of appeitite is a side effect.

Goodluck

Getting kids to take medication is always a challenge.

One thing for sure they can pick up on your feelings about the upcoming events and it makes them even more stubborn. So if you have to take a chill pill of your own do it and go in like it is no big deal because it is going to happen.

Asking your kid to hold their nostrils. The less they smell the less they taste. It also requires them to open their mouth. Walk in with the dose ready when it is time. Preferrably not whe they are in the middle of something. Use a medication spoon, plastic shot glass, or minature measuring cup. I have found a plastic sauce dish from a chinese grocery or a child's tea party cup is the right size for one swallow.

I am not a big fan of useing a siringe because when you are wrestleing with a child you are quite likely to squirt it up their nose or in and eye or clear back to the back of the throat and choke them. It is best to use something they like and get them used to the idea first.

The pharmacist can give you flavorings for the liquid form. You can buy them in most cooking shops that sell candymaking supplies. Caution one drop is usually very strong.

I found some kids like one flavor better than another like maple syrup; or if they can have it carmel or marshmallow or even liquid hershey or applesauce. I found the little jelly squares they have at resturants are great. THey can be ordered in sugar free. The secret is letting them pick the flavor not the medicine. The great thing is they are very portable. Once my son picked ketchup but it got his medication down.

I found letting the child grind the pill sometimes helps.

Or grinding a peppermint or sour candy with the pill.

What I found out though is most kids can swallow really big pills with no problem if they want to. Especially if they swish and swallow a shot glass of water before hand. If you got a kid who doesn't like cold, probably from sensative teeth, try warm water.

I am not a big fan of giving any kid chocolate especially kids with allergies and asthma but diping the pill in candy hardshell chocolate you can buy in the Icecream toppings aisle has done the trick in a few cases.

One thing I DO NOT Recommend is the peanut butter. Some kids are HIGHLY allergic to peanuts and a child with repiratory issues is defintely a child I would not give peanuts.

It can help to have a child give you your medication first. Even if it is just a vitamin or a crushed tums it sets the example of being good. Don't make a face but applaude and smile when you do.

Hope some of these ideas help. Good Luck!

Hi, my son is prescribed these steroids for his breathing. The problem I have is I only have 5 pills and they dont taste very well, so I am suppose to crush them and put it into food. Sounds easier said than done.

My son has not been eating normally since he has been sick. He will not eat is favorites. So I am scared that if I crush it into something and he wont eat it, I am wasting this pill.

What would be your suggestions as to how I can give him this. He really needs this medication.

I always ask for liquid meds for my child. They still can't swallow a pill.
