Horses are better than cars. I wish I was not such a city slicker. I have done time on the ranch so to speak in Oregon and I mucked out a lot of horse stalls but one of the privileges I had was to take the horses out on the trails when I wanted too. I preferred to ride bareback with only the bridal and I never used Bite Bits. It was tricky learning how to service their hooves without getting kicked or bitten. I never had been kicked or bitten probably because I also resorted to bribery and rewards a lot. My favorite horse bucked damn near everyone that rode it off at least once and I have no clue why it liked me so much because I never had a bad ride with Goober at all and he was the only horse I could leave without tying him up and he always hung around.
I think it was the fact I gave him an apple after every ride and I never used the bridal to tell him where I wanted to go. Just a tap of my foot was all it took.
I would love to get three mustangs as a starter because I am not really interested in moving north to accommodate the horses I would really love to own. I think Rheinlands would suffer in the southern reaches of Cali. I love draft horses but Mustangs are so much less expensive to care for and although they come off as more High Strung than a draft horse the ones I was in contact with were good strong desert horses and actually seem smarter than quarter horses of any flavor. I don't want to keep my horses alone at all when and if I can ever get to where I can afford them.
How many do you own You lucky girl!!!!!?

all my experience has been with thoroughbreds who have retired from the track for various reasons. and retraining them for dressage and jumping

but off and on I think about getting back into reining

and cutting would be cool to take up too

Quiet that's great! I have watched TBs off the track being retrained as hunters & dressage horses. It takes patience to help them work on flexing to the right & getting them to pick up the right lead. Some people at the track even clean all 4 hooves from the left side, looks awkward to me, but they say it saves time.

I have a friend that has a retired Standardbred that she now uses for jousting. He came from a rescue that broke him to saddle before he was adopted.

I used to have a horse, but I don't right now. I'd love to have one again sometime in the future.

Actually I have no problem with eating horses that are raised for meat, but you may be eating a racehorse that was drugged & wormed with stuff you don't want to ingest. Horsemeat if it is to be eaten needs to be regulated as food.

La Femme

she had some tendonitis at the track and they retired her at 4 years old. Now she is a competing in dressage (a little too small for jumping compared to the warmbloods)

Pig meat / beef / chicken contains antibiotics, growth hormones, dioxins and other assorted stuffs that you wouldn't want to ingest normally. And these ARE regulated noway

Nice picture thanks for sharing it.

My dream horse is a warmblood. I thought i'd want a Hanoverian or Swedish, but recently I have been reading up on Cleveland Bays. They are a rare coach breed, but seem to be well suited for dressage & jumping as well. I like the idea of helping to save a breed that in danger of excinction.

Horses......

We've had many over our lives.... thoroughbreds... arabs...quarter horses.... brumbies...stock horses....mountain ponies..

Having done trackwork with racehorses, mustering cattle on a 3000km drove, eventing, showing pony club, dressage, barrel'sporting, endurance riding...

I could honestly say horses are a part of our lives.

We currently have a little chesnut egyptian arab galloway gelding, (it's my youngest daughter's pony)

True, but horsemeat is even worse. I wormed my horses every other month with stuff clearly labeled "not to be used in animals intended for human consumption". Horses that go to auction and bought for meat could have come from anywhere & been treated with anything. There's no way to know.

If you want to disscuss this may I suggest starting another thread? It's a valid topic, but rude to be bringing it up here.

My daughter's first "pony" was a Chestnut Crabbetbred Arab mare. She was pure Arab, but only 13.3.

My other daughter's first was an australian standard bred pony...14.1hh..a little black thing...

My eldest boy's first pony was a goldy welsh mountain pony, with a flaxen mane and tail...

the reason for these breeds, is their reliabilty, agility, (we live in hill country... beside the ocean)and endurance...

hard hooves, cool head, and stamina...

A little known fact...

I used to work and live on a ranch, for about a year.

I used to cut, brand, vaccinate, and castrate (yes, I said castrate)noway cattle.

I prefere not doing the deballing..ewwwwwww.sickThank you.laugh

I also took care of 12 Arabian Stallions there.

Whether its a "steel horse", or a "real horse".. I love my hair in the wind!

One of my horses got bitten by a snake and they said he was surely going to die. I stayed in his stall with him all night long and gave him love, and kept him calm, and he pulled through.

 even works on horses!
