Irony (from the Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία eironeía, meaning hypocrisy, deception, or feigned ignorance) is a literary or rhetorical device, in which there is an incongruity or discordance between what one says or does, and what one means or what is generally understood. Irony is a mode of expression that calls attention to discrepancy between two levels of knowledge. In fiction, it is a demonstration of the distance between the character's knowledge and that of the audience.

There is some argument[by whom?] about what qualifies as ironic, but all senses of irony revolve around the perceived notion of an incongruity between what is said and what is meant; or between an understanding of reality, or an expectation of a reality, and what actually happens

gee...I sure hope we're not going to be tested on this...ohwell

There are some people who will never exit the whining or venting stage. But for MOST folks, it is a cathartic experience which allows one to get it out of themselves and then they can deal and progress.

You said what I was thinking very eloquently. :]

I also wanted to say something about the karma thing, which may sound somewhat like a rant, but bad stuff happens to good people and that can be confusing. That's where the emotional catharsis comes in handy.

Although I know exactly where you're coming from. It's irksome when people complain to you and ask for help but discard any advice given to them. That's something I fail to understand. :/

So, if I said I lost my house this year, getting a divorce, my 16 yr old son passed away in car accident and I might not have a job after Jan. 1st, am I just whining? Am I butt hurt? Or am I just looking for a sypathetic ear to listen? Maybe I'm not being proactive.

Sorry, having a bad holiday...

Wow, I am so sorry. That is such a tough position to be in.
The best thing, in your case with so much going on, would be to talk about it with others.

I don't want to assume anything, but I believe the original poster was mainly referring to those who constantly complain about things but make no effort to change anything. Most of it tends to be petty things anyway.

I hope things start looking up for you. Take your time to deal with everything though. I'm sure there are many people here who will lend their support should you need it.

I know. Like I said, just having a bad holiday. Didn't mean to go off like that.

since this is the first time i'm hearing this... to me it sounds like you need to vent. and i'm okay with that.

but if you are sittin on your ass doing nothing about the joblessness (since that seems to be the only thing on that list that is correctable) and yet you complain to me over and over about it.. i'd call you out and ask you what you're really doing about this.

since there's nothing to be done about your house and your divorce and your son... i would wish you the best in healing and mourning for whats been going on. i would listen and offer advice whenever you asked for it.

don't be sorry. its not the holiday thats bad. its everything else around it and thats understandable. you have every right to your emotions.

I know exactly the type of person you are referring to.

They complain about being broke, not having a job, what they are going to do to pay bills but they won't get off their butt to go get a job. And when you tell them about jobs, they make excuses about EVERYTHING saying they can't get said job. And then someone comes and gives them money and they are happy til the next month comes along.

Yep, that irks me.happy
