before a lobster dinner she sent back for being overseasoned was replaced with a salad, he had mentioned, ooh, that looks good. she disagreed though only nodded.

after a coffee was delivered curiously thick-bodied and delicious, the two gentlemen who spoke blandly, scripted words they had seemed to her, disappeared from the restaurant. she did not ask the waitress about the cup of coffee or inquire of the men.

we're nice, the one had smiled before slipping back into conversation. it was not unusual for strange men to talk to her, but they were not strange, acting familiar.

she was then alone, not unlike a time before when one man greeted her in similiar knowing tones.

there is a sum for all events that take place in each person's life. she had reached a total that would sway and teeter-totter between the defining line of addition and the answer.

this point of stillness and thinking, but what to think, was a quiet moment before the next. all that is branded, cannot be taken away.

she walked the same steps that she could only presume the two gentlemen had taken before her to leave the restaurant. she'd walk back to an apartment where gas would be leaking, where there was a termite and a fruitfly that would wash down a sink drain before her, and the men would continue to come knocking on doors, opening doors and one would ask her, have you ever lit the pilot?
