Well i'll tell you that my dad worked for GM and they have now shutdown all but 2 plants in the U.S. leaving him to relocate not 1 but two times. These greedy ass business men need to have the employees close to heart too and not just themselves and their bankroll

The moped business Will skyrocket rocket until people get tired of that. Maybe technology on the shelve will be brought to the forefront.

I don't think the impact on normal factory workers will be that rough - those factories won't just close, they're full of automated equipment and skilled workers. Savvy business like Honda and Nissan will buy them up quickly and put them back to work. (Well that's my opinion at least.)

Chapter 11 would force them to reorganize a crappy business model

GM and Ford pay more to retiree benefits that they promised in the 70's than they do to payroll

Well I imagine for one, we'll keep buying foriegn cars like we currently do.

Two, pickups will become underpowered compacts that can't haul anything.

However, maybe just maybe, some bright young American will invent the next big thing, and we can retool all those worthless old factories into something else. Heck, it might even run good for a year or two, until the execs and unions realize that they haven't been greedy enough. Then the cycle will start all over!!

What? You needed a crystal ball to know that?

Oil its a funny thing it eventually runs out. We put a man on the moon with the technology of the 60s, that we now carry around in our pocket. We are using technology of the 1900s to fuel our worlds economy??? Whats wrong with that picture? $$$$$$$$$$$$$

America just needs better public transportation. Trams, buses, trains, subways, etc...

Very few people in Europe own cars, and they manage to get around no problem.

Europe is a lot more densely populated than America

public transportation doesn't make economic sense in the midwest and far west. Not enough people and too much distance

If the auto industry gets any bailout money it should be dependent on them retooling and producing predominantly hybrid cars. Or even better natural gas cars with a minimum of 50 mpg

Natural gas..We have huge supply right here. Maybe retool the trucks first with the infrastructure to support it????

THAT is what T Boone Picken is pushing for. Changing over the trucking industry to natural gas. Most truck stops already have natural gas plumbed to the station for hot water heaters and cooking

Those like me with childfen to transport all over the place and across state lines daily can't do that. I know I would LOVE not to have to drive but... I don't really have a choice there.

... I'm thinking no wonder gas prices have finally gone down. Someone got the picture. slaphead

My question is, how can those in charge not KNOW what this will do to the economy? If it's simple enough for laymen like me to get, why can't the economic "geniusai" not understand?

It scares me that such greedy morons are in charge of so very much. It truly does. surprised

To start there are more than 2 GM plants in the U.S. I have 2 plants within an hour in different directions of my house. And in my opinion if these auto makers would have lowered their prices then they would have made more money. The biggest reaon there are more americans buying foriegn vehicles is because of the price. The second reason is the long term savings. If a foriegn vehicle can get 25 mpg compared to an american made vehicle in the same class getting 18 mpg the choice is pretty clear on what is going to be purchased. In my opinion the auto industry is just like any other buisiness. If they are going to fail, a bailout is only a band-aid. If you or I had a company that was going under due to competition do you think that the government is going to bail us out? Yes I drive an amarican truck, and it is sad to see jobs being lost and the automakers going under. But, it's part of buisiness, and if you can't keep up with competition then you are going to lose.

Kinda makes since. At this point why not put everything into the trucks and infrastructure for it.Then wean the cars into.Look at the savings of usage just on the trucks.Create jobs in the infrastructure and weans us from being totally dependent on oil.laugh It wouldn't be hard to do you could have rolling refuelers for the trucks until the infrastructure support it..

I truly think he put it out because he thought it was right. He made his money in oil and Im sure continues today to do so. He put the facts about oil out there. You can speculate ulterior motives.
