Why do deaf people sign then? Or are some deaf people also mutes? embarassed

deaf people can talk but without ever having heard words it takes a lot of time and effort to learn how to "speak" but they can still make sounds

Mutes are unable to speak but does not mean they cannot hear

That's what I thought. I also think some people officially deemed "deaf" can hear somewhat, which makes the ability to speak more probable - like Marlee Matlin (sp?).

Now that we've settled the technicalities, my answer is "the ability to speak."

Half the people I know would be thrilled anyway.

there is different level of deafness just like different levels of blindness

So yes some deaf people can hear a little bit, hearing aids help, some none whatsoever and for those who can hear a little bit it makes it much easier to speak
