34th child abandoned under Neb.'s safe-haven law
3 hours ago

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 5-year-old boy has been dropped off at an Omaha, Neb., hospital only a day before the state Legislature begins a meeting to change the state's safe-haven law.

The state Department of Health and Human Services said Friday the boy was left at Immanuel Medical Center about 9 p.m. Thursday. He's from Sarpy County near Omaha.

Nebraska's safe-haven law was intended to protect unwanted newborns from being abandoned, but unlike similar laws in other states, Nebraska's doesn't include an age limit.

The Legislature opens a rare special session Friday afternoon to change the law and add an age limit.

As of Friday, 34 children have been abandoned under the law. Five have been from out of state.

It's so disheartening to see the number of parents that willingly abandon their children. I know parents sometimes have it really rough but to just abandon your child is wrong. These children will have problems that may run their entire lives. Some may get adopted or placed in loving homes with other family, while others may be bounced from home to home. They will need therapy for awhile, maybe years, to work past it.

Yet the parents can get away with dumping their kids off at a hospital and they go about their lives. Yeah they might be sad that they don't have their child anymore...

What about the child that doesn't understand why his/her mother didn't want him/her?

Please understand, I know sometimes parents just can't take care of a child..but waiting till the child is 5 or in their teens to decide this? How about the 16-year olds, it took that long to decide they couldnt take care of them?

My mom has been in a wheelchair since she was 17, she has had only one leg since i was 7. She never once gave up on us, when i was battling mental and emotional depression and split personality disorder, she didnt just drop me off at a hospital and leave me there. She was there every day, talking to me whenever I needed to talk. She is still there when the nightmares start and I wake up in the middle of the night, she calls me right away.

I can't agree with abandoning one child, at the very least talk to friends or family and see if they can help you even if it means granting them custody of the child, at least the child will be with people they know.

Abandonment can and probly will cause serious mental and emotional trauma for the child, someday I hope to be able to help children like that.
