Telephoneman, I was in the Navy, Basic Training in Orlando on Jan. 25, 1986, We were learning how to march with rifles. when Challenger blew up in front of our eyes.. We were north of Jacksonville in Fernandina beach when it blew. He come back white as a sheet... of course ol' John like to hit the ganja spliff a bit while out at lunch, so he was having a purple bud bad hair day that day. I was in the lunch room when he came back from lunch... looked kind of green like Herman Munster... then we heard about it on the radio. I won a scholarship at school in the winter semester called the "Ronald McNair Scholars Program"... Ronald McNair was an African American aboard the Challenger when it blew. The U.S. Department of Education started the McNair Scholars program a few years after he passed away. There are 20,000 students at my college. There are only 35 of us recognized as McNair Scholars. Only 15 of the 35 of us won the scholarships last summer, and of that, 9 of us had our reasech papers published in print. I was one of the final 9..... God has been very good to me. I have dome a lot with my education since being inducted into the McNair program. It has changed my life. It was in honor of what he achieved in life, he was a first generation college student (no one in his family had ever went to college), and he earned his PhD in Physics from MIT. He went on to become an astronaut aboard several space shuttles flights until the shuttle he was riding on that day in 1986 blew up. Funny how small a world it is, and what some folks lives can become and be affected by.... |
