Maybe a Golden Retriever A Golden Retriever would be my suggestion because they're loving, loyal, and great with kids. But, I suspect that he would be condemned by those who only find fault as trying to be too "white" if he makes that choice.

Most family dogs are retrievers, or mixes of them. They are great dogs and smart and playful, even in their old age (unless they are really old, then they won't get around as much) 
And Black Labs are great family dogs too, i think both breeds are very family oriented, even tho labs can get big in size =) |

I heard on of the girls is allergic & they are considering a poodle or poodle mix, because they tend to cause less allergy problems. One site said a "Golden Doodle"(poodle x Golden retriever) is what they may get.
