A Husband’s Response to His Lady’s Lament



To you I write my dearest lady

While in grief for you I compose

My journey is long in the land of my foes

And malicious has been the hand of fate

Exile has been my only reward



So devoted to me have your deeds been

You spent alone so many forlorn nights

The lark his song it haunts your heart

Stealing the blithe from your woe tattered soul

As your tears fall on bitter azure waves

That shivers any man’s spirit mind and heart



Through many bone yards have I waded

Crimson stained grounds with cloven shields

The corpses they sleep long among the mist

While here I bide across the sea

Alone I am a lord among the dead



Yet untold to you is where I dwell

My kinsmen have betrayed this lord

And upon the sand they left me

The gulls for me they cried



Bitter salt within my mouth woe within my heart

Stranded here beyond time in Lucifer’s keep

While they return to my angel awaiting at the gate

To them I say to take my throne

Leave with each horse resting in the stable

As long as you remain by my side



My heart beguile with thoughts of you

The last comfort of midnight’s dreams

If small sparrow would lead me home

And within my own bed I sleep



Gaze upon the diamonds they twinkle in the sky

Remember my dearest lady they are the same wherever they are

Never another solemn hymn will ever again you recite
