The jayhawk is a fictitious bird (combination of the blue jay and the sparrow hawk I believe). The term was used to refer to Kansas Free Staters before and during the civil war.. or, as my friends to the south like to call it, The War of Northern Aggression.
Anyhow, it was adopted by Kansas University as their mascot. Rock Chalk Jayhawk! |
