Here's a good word for Michigan.

98% of adults are registered to vote.

Why? Because when you obtain a driver's license you can register anywhere. If you move and change your address on your license your voters registration changes.

If you move and obtain a license in another state you are dropped.

You do not have to visit the county clerk.

Our Secretary of State recently floated the idea of pre-registering 16 year old's who are applying for the drivers license.

I hope we see a good turn out here in this state.

North Carolina has come under fire because they have been seeking proof of citizenship when obtaining a license to drive. Several Hispanic organizations have filed suit against the state and, I beleive, that the requirements now are you only have to prove residency.

Do you have to prove citizenship in Michigan? To drive or vote?

No. You can get a driver's lic in michigan as long as you can prove that you are legally able to be within the united states. We have to provide 3 forms of identification in order to obtain a driver's lic.

"leagally able to be within the united states"

So if I am a Chinese citizen on a student visa I can get a license to drive? Voter registration is not automatic is it? And, please tell me you have to prove citizenship to register to vote.

We've had some controversy over non-citizens and drivers licenses.

Lots of anti-immigration people like to use this issue to drive scare tactic politics with lines like "Joe wants illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses!"

They forget that we have many non-citizens here who are working or attending school who must drive.

Registering to vote is a separate issue.

In MA you must have a valid passport and visa to get a license if you don't have a SSN and are a US citizen.

no voter registration is not automatic. when we go if we aren't registered to vote we can check it, but if you aren't a citizen then you aren't able to be registered.
