You call it a sucky. People in my area call it a binky.

My child refused to use one.

My cousin's child kept one until almost 5 yrs. old.

I didn't mean "problem" to be a bad thing hope no offense has been taken by anyone.

I just ment after trying to take the sucky away it gets to be a problem well in my case anyways it's been 4 days now and she wakes up 4 times a night and wont take naps and before she was a good sleeper.

I just hopes she forgets all about it soon lol

She will. Soon it will be a forgotten memory.

She just might need some extra attention for a little bit.flowerforyou

My daughter just decided she didn't want it one day...I think she was 4 months old...and I never tried to give it back to her after that. It wasn't a big thing with her and for that I'm thankful for. My nephew sucked on his binky for many many years....I think past his 5th birthday.

I sympothize with you. Have you thought about giving it back to her? Maybe she's not ready to be without it? I'm not sure that using it just at nap or bed time is a bad thing?

The only reason I gave it to her in the first place if because she was a month early and she would wake up every 30 mins for the bottle. Not that she wanted to drink out of it she just wanted to suck on the nipple. She always wanted to be sucking on something, it went on like that untill she was 3 weeks. Being a single mom with no help and no Sleep i caved and bought her one.

The only reason I took it away was i brought her to her first denist appt. and he said her teeth are crooked b/c of the sucky.

I want to give it back but I dont want to have to put her thru the taking it away again stage.

Kids should be born with a manual LoL

it's never easy when you're small to give-up something you love, or old habits. but what a step to do so, congrats or rewards are in order. (helps ease the transition....sometimes lol)

Could be the pacifier making her teeth crooked, could be they're just crooked. I didn't have that problem with my son, he rarely used one, but have a lot of friends. Thing is, unless they're ready to give them up, it might not work. But, like I said, I didn't have that problem so what do I know?

If you give it back chances are she'll give it up when shes ready...

As for the teeth being crooked..I think that all depends on the dentist.. My dentist told me that children that have their binky for a substantial amount of years 5 or so it could actually affect the way the roof of their mouth forms... she said nothing about teeth

Good luck and you do what YOUthink is best for your lil one!!!

Yes, it affects the teeth too. It can even incorrectly shape the bone that the teeth come out.

Good going getting rid of the "sucky" or as we call it here in KC "binky"... The silly things will make your kid BuckToothed.. and while some people find that an admirable trate... it can be quite costly in the long run... try and keep her mind off of it.. and next kid just don't get em hooked on it to begin with.. they are horrible nasty little things... biggrin

I always found it was easier to substitute something else a child finds comforting such as a doll or stuffed animal or one of my kids loved my satin pillowcase when withdrawing the pacifyer.

Great advice given, especially saying each child is different.

Eldest child of mine: It was called a "lolly" (lollipop). He weened off it himself at about 2 years, no problem. He just graduated into EATING plastic or hard bits and parts (even the coffee table) while teething. laugh

Middle child of mine: It was called "binky". OMG, she LOVED that thing (or thingS I should say, we had nearly 2 dozen scattered about and stored away for emergencies). This child would literally throw the WORST fit EVER if you took it away from her...so, yes...to shut her up, we gave it back to her at times. The dentist told us the same thing: STOP IT or she will have buck-teeth. Never happened, she finally gave up her "binky" by age 5, and she has perfectly straight teeth so far at the age of 10.

Youngest child of mine: It was called "silky". He never took to pacifiers, but couldn't stop himself from sucking on his blankets, linens, clothes, anything soft. He LOVED my ex-wife's silk shirts or our satin sheets. My ex often sewed things for friends, and would give him a few samples of "silk" to play with, and he took right to them. Yep, go ahead and laugh, we sure did! laugh Anyway, he clung to his "silky" for several years, suckling and coddling until he was 6 years old. He is 8 now, and still has "silky" blanket that he cannot sleep without. He'll just rub that "silky" between his thumb and forefinger for HOURS when he is pensive, sad or frustrated...it just brings him comfort.

Point being, don't we ALL need "comfort" at times? When your child is ready to replace that comfort of his/hers with something else...they will. Certainly, attempt to ween them off ot it, but in a loving manner vs. cold turkey. Help them realize, that all of life's comforts are not wrapped up in one "sucky". laugh
