Morning sun crawls in partially opened curtains
Bare feet shuffle across tiled floor
There is no grunting from the coffee pot
Instead an aluminum can is cracked open
Frothy liquid is all he has,
Soon the shortcomings will not be remembered
Perhaps neither will the good things
His world is fuzzy, spinning a little too fast
Words come out in a jumbled mess
Twenty-two years before love he once felt
Produced a tiny miracle
Drunken steps led him far away
Maybe not in body
But in mind
She reaches out to him now
The voice in that can is too strong
Love was lost not once but twice.
Later he'll drift into an endless black pit
Summoned by alcohol
The cries of a young woman desperate for things to change
Will not reach his ears
She tosses out a line longing to reach him
If only just once
But he cannot catch it
Through bloodshot eyes she is a stranger
Clouded memories of the blessing she once was are too dim
Time is not endless, and there is much to be said
Still, Drunken steps carry him away
