It is a common misconception. I found that the average American actually believed some of that but with me being me,  I don't think I helped the situation much.
When I was in the US, I would perpetuate the myths of moose in the back yard, living in cabins/igloos and being a primitive, undiscovered society as often as possible.

It does feel rather cavernous in here when you only get a handful of visitors each day. I guess that's what happens when you live in the second largest country on the planet with less people than California.
People are spread out far from each other.

At least we finally upgraded from soup cans and wet string for communication! That was a real problem during the winter months and those pesky beavers constantly gnawing down all the poles.
