My confession is this;

I have forgotten how to play! Ahhhhh! I was messing around in my uncle's recording studio just hitting random strings and hoping it sounded good, and i realized that thats not how to play guitar, thats just being stupid!

So would any guitar players out there recommend a way to re-learn, and maybe learn new stuff along the way?

Ultimateguitartab is a great place to re-learn some old songs you have forgotten, http://www.ibreathemusic.com/ will save your life.

But honestly how long has it been since youve played? Theres riffs and songs that I couldnt unlearn if I wanted to.

I picked up a guitar a few weeks ago, after not playing for maybe six years, and it all came back to me -- how to break a string, how to drop a pick, how to make the most godawful clunking noises when the low E isn't held down tightly enough -- it'll come back to me.

There are so many FREE courses on the internet that will get you in the right direction.

Go to you tube and search for "free guitar instruction"...and find a teacher that you like.

Some of the best are Justin Guitar -Griff Hamlin and David Taub

Try justinguitar.com - a good teacher with an easy going style and FREE!

Good luck,
Steven

I still remember to play some songs, mostly acoustic strumming songs, but my fingers aren't as fast anymore. I'm lucky to go from a C chord to a D chord without screwing up O_O

Buy a stand, keep it there instead of the case so that you can see it more, you will be more inclined to pick it up. Play daily, even for a short time. There is all kinds of stuff online to refresh your memory

Playing guitar is like riding a bike. Once you learn, you never forget! You may be a little rusty after a few years of not playing, but you should at least remember the basics of everything.

Should've kept practicing. I've even managed to play the bass and drums. High five

I had a teacher tell me once, whenever your discouraged with your progress just flip the guitar over and try to play left handed and remind yourself how hard it is

Indeed. You might wanna look into power tab or guitar pro, the latter requires money though.

Sounds reasonable, I find that picking up other instruments will increase your desire to play guitar again.

You have just walked into my world, Unless you have access to one, (on a daily basis) i would suggest a nice acoustic six string, for starters, Alvarez,Ibanez, and a few others offer good quality instruments....some of the posts above suggest using the internet for tabs/chords. I am going to discourage that for now. I have played for almost 35 years now, and on various guitars/amps etc. My best advice is to pick up a chord book, actually two...Check with you book store, guitar chord guru, and guitar scale guru, both by Carl Arango, are excellent study tools. The easiest way, to achieve "any" goal, is with the right tools and info, if i can help you let me know.

And if you are left handed, stick your head in the fire.

and recognize the difference between practicing and playing

practicing is hard and tedious and it's easy to bail on the scales and fingering exercises and just play stuff
