Man cited for allegedly buying beer for young sons

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — A father who bought a beer for his 4-year-old son at the Fond du Lac County Fair and shared it with the boy's 2-year-old sibling was cited after becoming belligerent when he was approached by police.

A woman working at a beer tent last July told an officer she thought the man was joking when he asked for two beers — one for him and another for his 4-year-old son.

When he was questioned by an officer, he told him it's legal for underage children to drink in Wisconsin, as long as they're with their parents. The officer countered that the boys weren't old enough to know what they were drinking.

A police report said the man began yelling and swearing and was kicked off the fairgrounds.

The Fond du Lac County district attorney recently requested that the man be cited for disorderly conduct.

 A couple years ago, there was this little boy named Little Jimmy that lived on my street, he was about 9 or 10 years old and he was drinking beer and stealing and doing all kinds of ****. His mom and dad didnt even care what he did. The state people finally come and took him away or something. he was alittle thug. I told him to leave my stuff alone or I would kick his little ass. But he liked me because I gave him food so I didnt really have any problems with him.

I don't approve of giving young children large amounts of beer (the amount in question was large considering their age) but I think people are going alittle nutso on the subject of alcohol.

I was allowed small amounts of beer or wine on occasion, with a meal growing up. A standard remedy for a cold with a cough was a cup of hot tea with lemon, honey and brandy.

At Christmas we all shared a toast of traditional Swedish liquor called Akvavit.

My children were allowed in their late teens, if they asked to have an occasional beer.

When they turned 21 they didn't lose their minds. They'd learned to drink responsibly at home. This approach works out rather well in many parts of the world.

Relax and have a home brew! Just not with toddlers.
