The dryer is the true sock monster. I think that they get spit out your vent and then some homeless person picks them up and has nice clean socks and eventually will have matching socks if they continue to visit the vent.

It is the washer that's the culprit. It happen's when you overload it. They slip over the edge of the tub and are......gone for good.
