Topic: Anyone bold enough to perform their own communion rites? | |

I grew up in a Catholic household. Did the Communion thing, Pennance,
Confirmation and all that fun stuff. We were taught that it was best to let the priest put the bread into our mouths directly because our hands were dirty, and this was the "body" of the Big Man. Somewhere in my 30s I learned about the Jewish Sader dinner, and realized the obvious: Communion is Passover. Duh. And Passover is to be celebrated by the people personally - you dont need a priest to run the show. So I tried doing communion once or twice on "my own" with my kids. Felt perfectly right! The kids speak parts of the communion... I then mentioned the idea to my brother. Oh he was horrified! You'd think I just told him the Pope wasnt Catholic or something. <grin> What do you think? |

I have done communion on my own before. A priest isn't necessary to
communicate with God. I think next to washing away our sins, Jesus dying on the cross was done so that each of us could personally come to Father God and not have to come via certain "chosen ones." All that is needed for communion is you, God, the bread and wine, and a open and receptive heart. |

Jesus said where two or more are gathered I am in the midst. You don't
even need a third person, let alone a priest. In the early days after Christ people met in there houses. Although the bible says not to forsake the assembly, I don't believe you have to be in a church to take communion. My dad was a Church of Christ preacher up until he died last year. When my mom was bedridden with cancer 4 years ago my dad gave her communion ever Sunday. So no, I don't think there is a thing wrong with what you are doing. JMO |

John 6:51-53
Jesus said if you don't eat of that bread,, you have no life......NOWHERE in the bible does Jesus or anyone else lay out specifics about how to take communion, only RELIGION does that. Jesus didn't like the RELIGIOUS people much from what I gather! |

Communion, to partake of communion/sacrament it's not necessary to have
a priest present. If you think about it was there a Bonifide priest in the early days? Its my belief that to partake of communion/sacrament is to ask for the blessings of God and Jesus in accepting his body to your own in the consuming of the piece of bread/wafer. Also I feel that in consuming the water/wine that should also be given in communion/sacrament the same acceptance is given. In accepting these tokens I feel we are asking for the forgiveness of sins we have commited, and to follow the teachings as best as we are able to. I feel it is necessary to have the items blessed by ones own thoughts, and knowledge of what these tokens represent, and feel that if these tokens are taken they are in remembrance of the Body And Blood of Christ, that was shed for us on the cross centuries ago then a priest is not necessary. Besides some of the churches I have attended do not pass the wine/water. At that point its time for me to go elsewhere. Seems a little selfish to me they don't pass it. Spirituality is what is inside us, it is how we present ourself to ourselves. To be spiritual is to walk the walk, not talk the talk. I just wish I knew when to walk and leave the talking to someone else. G |
