Rut is when the females go into estrus. the males begin to tear up stuff marking territory so the females will urinate on his scrape line to signal heat. The males hang out fight off other males and mate. There necks swell due to the size of their racks and the extra fat the put on to sustain them through rigorous mating. There is more to it but its happening now out in the woods near you.
