in football these days, do you think coaches are relying on fieldgoals to much?

i do cause i see it all the time a team will drive down the field then get conservative on plays to not make mistakes to be sure they at least get 3 points

Yes they will get all the way down the field and then do a bunch of run plays or short pass plays and only maybe one shot to the end zone. But in there defense to drive all the way down the field and get no score would just be wrong after all that is how you win

What are you new to sports?

The object of any game is to outscore your opponent. You do this by not leaving points on the field. If your offense stalls you take three, especially if you are on the road, or if you haven't scored yet. You got to get the ball rolling. Score a few field goals get the offense moving and wear a defense down. It's a sixty minute game not a game of possession as usually talked of, and that means you take scores when you can get them.

Besides, defenses have been hamstringed enough. You aren't even allowed to cover a receiver anymore. There are rules governing how you tackle, WTF is up with that??

I know, I'm in the minority, but I love a good defensive game. Big hits, nasty ones like Jack Tatum, Steve Atwater, Ronnie Lott or Jack Hamm used to give. Now that's football!! (Can a brother get an Amen?)

However, the pass happy offenses of the NFL are not designed for scoring inside the twenty. Modern zones eliminate the ability for receivers to truly be open. And the playcalling ability of some coaches is suspect. Al Saunders never learned you don't run on 3 and goal between the five and ten yardline. You almost have to run a play-action to get the momentary freeze you need from the linebackers, but coaches are afraid to spread an offense that close in. D-lines can just tee off at that distance, and QBs are just too precious to be hit now a days. Anyone here remember that pic of Frank Gifford bleeding from the face in the end zone?
