you COULD also do this-
take out the current hard drive to your computer. have a computer tech or a friend who's versed with computers do this if need be. then go out to an electronics store and get another hard drive. install the just-purchased hard drive into your computer and make sure all your anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall programs areinstalled onto it. then reinstall your old hard drive, being careful to make sure that it's set to be a slave drive. from there, you can check the affected disk for stuff like viruses, trojans, and other forms of spy/malware. once you're absolutely sure the infected files have been cleaned out, then you can go about looking for your pics and stuff. you can also get and install a freeware recovery program called PC Inspector File Recovery, which will search your drive for missing pics and other files, even in the event of a format or physical drive error. |

I like this answer. It has the added bonus of giving you a spare hard drive to keep the data on in case this happens again. Another option is buy one of the external hard drives they have now. about 500 gigs should have plenty of space to copy your hard drive to before you have it "restored" |

If you had a separate reinstall disk for XP you could just install over and it would overwrite the files that are causing the problem . . . probably.
What it sounds like is that your system has a restore partition that will restore it to _exactly_ as it was when you got it. I looked at best buy.com and a 500G hd can be had for $120. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8908621&type=product&id=1216424110187 It's probably not a virus, from the sound of it. Missing files can cause havoc and be invisible to those types of scans. |

Also true, I just wasn't sure of the technical expertise of the user involved and so I suggested what I would for my mother or sister (both of whom are intelligent, but not computer savvy).

truth be told, practically anything you do to treat a computer problem that either requires re-installation of software or manipulation of hardware would be considered a little "over" what a typical computer user might have to deal with.
that's why it always helps to have someone who is computer savvy around, so that they can take over when stuff gets to stinky. |

in the future have a external drive to back up to soo you don't lose your stuff or buy an apple :d
