Topic: it costs to be homeless | |

you can just put on old torn clothing, pee on yourself, go sit under a bypass for 12 hrs and get the same feeling.... True. But did the shelter get any money for that? And would someone be willing to pay to do that? Of course not. Few people are going to put themselves at risk to have the homeless experience. And we all know that what the county is offering isn't anything near really being homeless. |

This isn't about me being bitter. I just feel that there are far better ways to raise awareness and funds than pretending you're homeless. If it was just about awareness and raising funds for the shelter, they wouldn't charge so much. The only people that can afford to "play homeless" are people that have at least an extra 100 bucks to drop out of nowhere. Well, that is a legitimate point of contention.... whether there are better ways. I can only argue that it certainly caught your attention. It would be interesting to know how much money they raise and how many people were willing to pay that amount of money for the experience. As far as it costing so much.... if you're trying to raise money, you'd better target people who have it or find a good way to convince people who don't to give up what little they have. This is obviously targeted to people that have it. I know that I can't afford it. My guess is that for those who can barely afford to pay the rent (if that), they don't really want to 'play' homeless anyhow. Oddly, we're probably on the same side of the big issue of homelessness. I legitimately want to help with the issue and I'm sure you do too. We just disagree on whether this is a proper way to do it. |

We can just agree to disagree I do see your points. As I said before, I believe their intentions are good. I just think it's a bad way to go about it. I truly hope they are able to raise money and more than "part of the proceeds" actually go to helping the actual homeless.
Can you imagine tho? Being a homeless person, out there fighting day in and out on the streets and then hearing about this program? Where people pretend to be homeless for the day, just so they will donate to help you? We can do better than this. |

I said at the beginning that part of proceeds go toward a local homeless shelter...

I said at the beginning that part of proceeds go toward a local homeless shelter... Better be the part that didn't go toward expenses |

I believe this is a link to an article about the event. In this context I have no problem with it. You can read and decide on your own. |
