I used to speak german fluently (had to was stationed in germany for
three years, lol) but with no chance to use it regularly I have
forgotten most of it.

i only took it in school.. many moons ago..

but when i was in the Nederlands for vacation.. dutch is close to
german.. so i was able to understand some of what was being said and
could read some of the newspaper

yes it is very close....
talking about language lessons, I have to shudder when I remember
Bosnia... Lol, I had to take a crash course in about five different
languages, and was expected to be verbally competent within five or six
weeks.

ugh... that didn't sound like fun

To be honest I can not say I did not enjoy being in Bosnia. Although to
correct it a bit I was on the adeg in Hungary, not Bosnia proper (most
people do not associate the two though and it is easier to say Bosnia).
I deployed there with the second love of my life, had fun meeting new
people and trying new foods and cultures (and I have to be honest dog
tastes real good; I will not intentionally eat it, but it DOES taste
good). And as frustrating as learning all those languages was, I
enjoyed it. I loved being able to come home on leave and start spouting
off in one language and then change to another when someone started
responding in it.
I also learned a lot about myself and life out there. It was not too
bad a place all things considered.
