I used to be a server long ago. And I can totally understand where you're coming from. I know that some people have economic hardship right now. So they tip what they can and compliment you on your service. Others are just cheap. There is so many people out there that do not realize just how challenging and exhausting it is to serve customers. If you could only let them walk in your shoes for a week, I'm sure their perspective may change. But unfortuately, there will always be people that just do not give a damn.

All we can do it take it one stride at a time and hope for the best.

So I'm a server. A very good server if I do say so m'self. I know this because I've been out to eat, and I've seen the kind of service around town and I know I'm at least a notch better than the rest. To the best of my ability I do the same job for every one of my customers, even the old couple whose bill never totals more than $4 that never leaves more than a dollar tip (hey, it's 25% right?). It's a matter of principle. Now I know some people have no concept of what a good tip is, I don't fault them for it but what I don't understand is the customer who is full of compliments but doesn't tip well. Isn't the tip supposed to be a reflection of the service? What's with the..."You did an excellent job" and then less than 10%????? I just don't get it. Is the recognition/compliment supposed to be enough? Cause I'm kind of trying to earn a living here.

So my question to you minglers and hi-sayers is this...how much does the service influence how much you tip? Are you a $5 no matter what the check total kind of customer or do you use some percentage-to-service ratio?

well i use to work in food business for awhile when i was younger and i know how people can compliment you on good service and tip you peanuts,it would fustrate me too cause i work my ass as well, but now when i eat out would tip a hefty 20 to 25 dollars, even if services was bad ,so when i show the next time and i get the same server he/she will give me better service the next time:thumbsup: drinker

I guess I shouldn't gripe.
I know some people leave me WAY too much and it evens everything out.
it's just that on a day like today I find those little inconsistencies irritating.

Been there! I understand it can get frustrating. There isn't anything wrong with venting. If you bottle everything up then you become a walking time bomb.
