I guess I once thought when our kids were all grown

But now I can see that that isn’t your view

I know there are things on which we disagree
But I never thought they’d come between you and me
I thought that we could do some compromising
That you don’t agree is so very surprising
There’s no room for differences, now I can see
I didn’t want you to be just like me
You gave me some balance, some focus and sense
I gave you some silliness, fun, and nonsense
I thought that your strengths made my weaknesses fade
I thought you could learn from mistakes that I’d made
I never expected that I’d ever find
Someone exactly like me in their heart, soul and mind
I loved you so much for the ways we did vary
You were so gloomy when I was so merry
And you were so calm when I bounced off the walls
I thought it was good, I rejoiced in it all
But it made you unhappy, I’m seeing that now
I’ll go on without you – I’m just not sure how
