Topic: Ever have an impressive boss? | |
---|---|
We've all had lots of really bad bosses. I've had two bosses that I'm
still in awe of. I work in the software biz, and I've worked with some pretty smart ppl, (lots of idiots too) but two bosses just astound me with their ability to think so abstractly and broadly. One day John and I were called to a meeting w/ the boss. The boss wanted us to write a program, and he laid out the concepts and what it should do. He put it very plainly, but, I didnt get it. John nodded his head understandingly during the whole meeting. So, I followed along too. Walking back to our cubes afterwards, John stops me and asks "Ok, do you feel as stupid as I do? Did you understand a thing he meant?" Both these bosses are also good-guys, fair, and usually consistent. How about you - any "good boss" stories? |

I had the best boss ever. He was my mentor in the banking industry at a
time when MEN did not mentor women in that industry. I was manager of Operations and I was responsible for ordering pamphlets that would go out in statement mailings. As usual I had him review the copy before I ordered the printing, and again had him review it before I mailed it. After the mailing, he came back from a board meeting, stormed in past me and my poeple opened his door, pointed at me and said "YOU in here NOW" I complied. Sitting accross the desk from him he threw down the material and calmly said "want to tell me about this?" Sure, it's the enclosure we ordered and mailed last week with the checking statements, is there a problem? "Yes it's wrong, the interest rates da da da - how did it get sent out?" Well I submitted it to you "NO YOU DIDN'T", Yes I did "I DID NOT APPROVE THIS" I would not have sent it out if you "STOP, just stop saying I saw or I approved anything" he was angrier than I had ever seen him. Quietly I began again, After it was approved for printing, the person I had review it, agreed to it's validity - at that point he started to laugh. "OK, I'll eat this one, tell me how do we fix it". And we went from there. He was totally the most awesome boss. |
