I am not sure about animals experiencing love for other animals, but my old husky B.J. fought his mother to protect me from her years ago.

I think they do. My late cat Terry would snuggle up with my other cat Snowball and follow her around and protect her from other cats who tried to attack her. I guess he felt he was the dominate male and she was his dominate female, but i dunno.
Ever since he died, Snowball meows into the night until she goes to bed, i'm sure she misses the company |
