mmmk here goes.
let's say...hypothetically...of course
a person uses pictures of another person on a dating website...I know there are civil penalties but is this a criminal action?

nope, only thing they can do is sue for copyright stuff
possibly harassment issues as well..

nah, harrassment is in the form of making threats, continuously contacting a person,or pretty much acting in a manner that is rude/vulgar towards a certain person

*fingers crossed that I didn't break the rules!*

Unless the photo's were copywrited, than it's not against the law to copy/use the pictures. Once pictures are posted on the internet with out that they are up for grabs. If you're looking into the fraud aspect of using someone else's pictures, especially on a dating site, don't think you have any legal grounds what so ever, but really depends on the state. It's usually the site that rules that kind of thing.

so your saying the only penalty is losing your privileges on whatever site they are being used on?

Privately owned sites have their own rules and tend to not want a legal watch-dog ruling over it (bad for the public eye). Depends on what was done with the picture or if the picture was copyrighted or is covered under the Digital Rights (as with something you drew, put up online, or other works of art)...typically however they don't see any legal action, usually a guy in a suit sends an e-mail out to the person saying "please stop"...kind of like when you download stuff illegally and your ISP sends you a cease and desist letter...

Ultimately there is probably nothing that can be done, however like I said if it is under the Millenium rights area (works of art) then you can have it taken down...that is about it.

if that is true you don't even own your own face anymore!
sounds kind of like what I suspected but it seems so wrong that I thought I must be missing something.
