I have learned that the "long distance game". Is not an easy one to play. You usually don't win.

I think a long distance relationship can work. The key is that one of the two has to be capable of eventually relocating. For me, I don't have a problem relocating. My kids are all adults and three out of the four that I had all live in different states. There's nothing that holds me here.
