Why should, or well do, we place more concern on how we look to others than how we look to ourselves, when in the long run we are only truly our own best friend, should we not only care to impress ourselves then?

You raise a good point here, if you feel good about yourself first, that in turn will project out to others.

I try to impress my dog...he is my best friend and I wouldn't want him to think I was sloppy.
