Just had to run to the store (6 miles), had to take a detour due to road construction.... haven't been that way in probably a year.

Well, as I passed Billy-Bob's Grandad's place, I spotted the MOST BEAUTIFUL pack of Coondawgs I have ever seen ~Romping, playing.... Coats glistening like a rainbow around each of them.... I sat, dumbfounded for perhaps an hour, on the side of the road, just watching.... paralyzed with amazement

I just HAD to know!!!! ("Uncle" Otis [Spelled O-tis, but Pronounced Ot-tis] had always been a 'Connoisseur of fine Coondawgs', but they had always looked pitiful.... he didn't feed them but just enough to barely survive on.... Said they "Wouldn't hunt if'n they wusn't hungry").

So, I pulls into the driveway and tooted the horn.... Uncle Otis came out, we exchanged our amenities then got down to business....

"I have NEVER SEEN you have such beautiful, frisky Coondawgs", says I.... "Is that a new breed you been hide'n from me????"

Uncle Otis takes out his Snuff-box from the wire-pliers pocket of his overalls, takes a dip, closes and replaces the Snuff-box, wipes his mouth and says....

"Nope".

"Well what in h-e-double'l are you feedin'm????" Says I.

Uncle Otis spits, grins, winks, and says "Turnip-Greens"!!!!

(Now I was birthed at night, but not last night!!!! Neither did I fall of a Turnip-truck yesterday, Tho' I do know a lot about Turnips....)


I KNOW Coondawgs won't eat Turnip-greens!

So, for the first time in my life, I acted plumb disrespectful to Uncle Otis!!!!.... I called him a "BALD-FACED LIAR"!!!!

He just stood there.... Spittin', grinnin' and winkin' .

"Will if'n you pen them up and don't feed'm nut'n else for 'bout two weeks!!!""

turnip greens to feed to a coondawg are a dang sight better'n collard greens

This is the Honest-to-GOD truth....

While visiting in the capacity of Chaplain at a "Tobacco-free" jail a few years back, as the guard came to let me back out, She started sniffing and said, "I smell dope, somebody is smokin' Marijuana" Well, immediately started

....Supper the night before was Collard-greens, the prisoners had dried them and were rollin' and smokin' them... CROSS-MY-HEART!
