when you leave your present job you can go on COBRA for up to 18 months.
That means you pay the full premium of the medical insurance at your previous job, but you get to keep the insurance for a year and a half. I did that when I left the last job that I will ever have. I pay $277 a month but its better than getting slammed with a huge bill. When the medical insurance at your new job kicks in (usually 90 days but sometimes longer), you can drop the COBRA. Check with the Human Resources Person at your current job before you leave. They have 45 days from the time you leave to offer you coverage under the COBRA Plan, thats the law. |

Garden is absolutely correct. The other thing you need to know is that
whatever the medical condition is, it may be cause for your NEW insurance not to cover any related issues for a particular time period. Just need to consider this in case your condition is not a completely curible short term thing. BUT the good news is that the law is that your new insurance company can not deny you benefits when your new job allow it, they can only deny you benefits as pertains to this one issue, that's why COBRA is a handy thing to keep for a while. |
