Any of yall give blood regularly?

Haven't given blood since high school. Was donating plasma for awhile but haven't done that either for at least 4 years now.

Nope, have to take iron supplements, so they won't take mine

I do, but today they asked me if I'ld do the machine that splits the red, white and plasma...its soooo much better.
But it takes longer.

What does that do or why do they do that?

When you get a tranfusion it takes two sets of regular withdrawals to make one full unit. So if you give the normal way they have to take it back to the blood institute and split it then they dont have enough so they add your blood to someone elses and give it to recipient. they get two peoples blood at once...increased risk of rejection just like organ donors. and takes more time to put in use.

This way its done and goes directly to hospital ready to put into someone.

For the donor, its complicated but they remove it split it recycle your one whites cells and put them back in with saline at the same time. Takes about three recycles and your done. your have your nutrients back and its less harmfull on your body and decreases the time between giving. Less bruising and pain from the needle site.

That's sounds pretty similar to how they take plasma actually.

Yes it is...

They said now that Im used to the process next time I can give a double...but have to wait 120 days instead of 58. If i do a double.

Anyway, I recommend it. If you ever give blood.

I know Fire.

I figure as long as I can I will. I had some friends who needed it and I may need it someday.
