In a February 2000 interview with ABC News, McCain said his initial opposition to a holiday was based on his belief that “it was not necessary to have another federal holiday, that it cost too much money

Oh stop with the race baiting...

Is it any better than the people Obama holds up as heros? His past afiliations are VERY questionable...to say the least.

He never fought in a war & never had to deal with being a POW either. McCain has...so let's not go there.

Reality check....
huh So its okay to be against MLK if your a veteran??huh I dont see the connectionhuh

flowerforyou I assure youflowerforyou

flowerforyou This is a big deal flowerforyou

it's only a big deal because mlk is back...if he was white then nobody would care if he didn't have a holiday named after him...i don't see why anyone needs their birthday as a national holiday...when someone finds a cure for cancer or aids or figures out how to stop global warming or we actually get a president who feeds our starving people before other countries then maybe they deserve their own holiday

good point

after are federal holiday === paid day of for those who are paid with your tax dollars

what do "the people" get for this expenditure

all federal holidays should be unpaid if the federal employee does not work that day

That is where McCain's opposition is misconstrued and why!
Many of you are not old enough to remember when this happened, and I'm not sure if every State handled it in the same way!
If you cant understand a Veterans feelings about this then I feel for your common sense!
It was handled badly and has yet to be corrected!

Hmm. I wonder what African-Americans feel about this issue?

My girlfriend is African-American, and I know she would rather have MLK Day.

Im sick and tired of the party and fing racial crap....We need to get rid of electoral votes and go by majority....then we wouldnt have a wimpy a$$ president in office...All the young ones are jumping on the band wagon to vote because their parents or friends are influencing them....My opinion...If you dont understand the issues then dont f*cking vote...you just tear up the whole political process anyway. Every vote does count...its just i dont want someone to vote just to say they did...that is so damn lame...they tell people Im an american...I voted...big deal...now read about it...explode

yes the majority of the american populous is to lazy to inform themselves as far as the issues

or even the true stance behind political candidates

just like this mlk day thing i wonder how many tax dollars this and any other federal holiday costs the american taxpayer

washintons birthday is not a holiday

roosevelt's (the only prez to be in office 4 terms) is not a holiday

granted mlk was a great man no doubt about it and i am pretty sure mccain feels the same way

but to spend millions of dollars every year to celibrate his birthday

i would almost bet mlk himself would say this money could be better used to work on the equal rights of all and to move closer towards the realization of all races working in unison for the betterment of man

I have to disagree with MLK being the greatest man...No such thing as the greatest man or women anywhere...That would be like seating them at the right hand of the father.

The holiday is there for one reason and one reason only...Racial relaxation...

Right now we are faced with the worst nightmare in American history...All the third worlds are laughing at us right now, Our allies are wondering whether its a good thing to side with us, the citizens of this so called great nation, dont want to live here anymore, our country is poor, its inhabitants are worse off than ever because we send the aid in the opposite direction. We have soldiers dieing all over the world for someone elses cause. We are contributing to global warming more than any other country...

I make a comparison to the great depression...

Before the depression started...people lived within their means..then everything fell apart...they had to stand in food lines for food....but that experience made them richer in the long run..they didnt cry like babies because they didnt have matching shoes..

Now,,,there are so many people who live way beyond their means...If they had to give up TV...they would f*ing die..not to mention internet, telephones, electronics, nice cars...It doesnt surprise me in the least that the forclosure rate has toppled over in the million.. People suffer now because of their own hand...If you take too many cookies out of the cookie jar...someone will have to replace them.

(((adj4u))) Had to post to get the heat off of my baby gurl..Mandy...

i never said he was the greatest man

i said he was a great man and i feel he was

i would not label any man a greatest man for i do not know all men

(for he ladies out there man in this instance is multi-gender)

there are great men that do not get any recognition and some may be greater than any known man in the world

so maybe we should abolish all federal holidays

and reestablish one holiday (not paid) that is called mankind day

I don't see how getting rid of MLK Day will solve any of these things.

But, yeah, he was just a great man, he wasn't Jesus or the Second Coming.

A lot of African-Americans identify with him, so why would you want to stir up trouble with them by getting rid of the holiday?

Anyway, I agree with those problems you mentioned, and it is not a stretch of the imagination to say that there are serious economic problems in this country that could lead to another Great Depression.

My dad lived through it.

It was pretty bad.

People had to stand in long soup lines and many who had all their money tied up in the stock market lost everything.

A lot of these people jumped out of skyscraper windows to their deaths.

its stupid and unfair. !!

 I agree. Its stupid and unfair of John McCain to dishonor Martin Luther King Jr. that way.

This topic is ridiculous. It's baseless rhetoric to assume McCain thinks that MLK's contribution to this country was nothing. He just doesn't see a reason to make it a federal holiday. Why just him when there are so many others that deserve one as well? The Founding Father's of this country get lumped all together and they even get tossed to the background of July 4th.

Grow up.

I almost hate to defend McCain. I wont vote for him but I understand his opposition to MLK day! It was not so much against honoring the man as it was against substituting a holiday!
Here in NC it replaced Veterans Day as a recognized holiday giving the day off for State employees and practically everyone else. Employers used to be required to recognize Veterans Day by giving employees the day off. When MLK day became Federally recognized rather than adding another holiday it replaced Veterans day on the list!
A lot of Veterans were angry and still are. We are not angry about MLK day becoming a holiday, but about it replacing Veterans day as a Federally recognized holiday!
We feel that they should have added a 12th holiday instead of replacing Vets day.
After all Veterans day honors brave men of all races! We deserve the day off!

i'm sorry but no alot of african-americans don't IDENTIFY with mlk....they just have to find as many black people as possible to put on a pedistal to feel like they aren't being taken over by the white man and the government isn't gonna risk more lawsuites on that so they give them what they want....they don't identify with him because most of the black people especially here in the south are more raciest against white then we've ever been against them....they use the defacs system for everything they can because they think we owe them something for our ancesters having slaves during the civil war...hell half of them can't even name their relatives that were slaves but they're so quick to use them as an excuse to have 10 kids and sit on their ass and milk the system for all it's worth while the rest of america has to work their ass off to pay for it....mlk didn't stand for that...he wanted equal rights, how do we have equal rights if only minorities get federal aid for living assistance and medical and don't tell me it doesn't work that way because i've been there and seen that first hand....i've been a single mother since i was 17 and had to work 2 jobs most of the time because the only assistance i could get was $60 a month in food stamps but i've seen people that were black or had mixed babies that got everything defacs has to offer and yet they ride around in brand new cars wearing name brand clothes...so yes it's all about racial issues and it will always be a big deal to the black community when a white man wants to get rid of a holiday about a black man.

I'm sorry about your hardships, but hatred toward African-Americans won't help you.

I don't doubt there are some that might exploit the system, but not all of them do.

Heck, there are Caucasians that exploit the system, too, and you could say the exact same things about them.

When you make blanket statements like that, it feeds into racial stereotypes.

By painting African-Americans with the same broad brush, some people might think that they are all that way, so it mischaracterizes those that aren't.

No wonder they think a lot of us are racist.embarassed

he did not want to get rid of it he just did not want to establish it

lets see he was in nam fighting in the sisxties then a pow for how long

he was not even in the country when mlk was active

and it was the cost of a federal holiday that caused the no vote not the fat that mlk was black

i am for abolishing all federal holidays if ya need a holiday then make 1 holiday unpaid to cover everything
