The story spans 6 years from 1955 to 1961. Cathy grows from 12 to 18 (legal adult). It's key that she becomes of legal age in 1961 for reasons I won't tell.

Todd grows from 14 to 20 over the same period of time. Twenty is too young to become a full-fleged veternary doctor. But he does graduate H.S. and is well on his way toward this goal. He's working as a veternary assistent by the end of the book. (me bad giving away the whole story. )

Of course there's a lot more to the story than this. It's an extremely complex story actually. Extremely complex.
